.Understanding Typology: A Pattern in Scripture and History
Typology is not about sentence structure or poetic patterns like chiasmus. Instead, it reveals how events in scripture foreshadow future events through recurring themes and historical parallels. The phrase "history repeats itself" applies here—what begins in one book of scripture or moment in history often resurfaces in another time, place, or record.
Unlike chiasmus, which has a focal point where ideas mirror around a center, typology unfolds in a sequence, with the latter half of an event or theme reappearing later in a "like unto" manner. Many of these patterns, known as historical metaphors, show how God's plan unfolds consistently across generations.
A more complex form of typology, called Dittochaeon, takes this idea further. Instead of a single repeated theme, a Dittochaeon follows a structured, chronological pattern that can span multiple chapters or books. This book explores these deeper scriptural patterns, revealing how they provide insight into God’s hand in history and prophecy for the future.
