This is a special page set up especially for those who pledged to support the Waterproof Book of Mormon concept on Kickstarter and still want to back the project. While the Kickstarter campaign expired without being fully funded, we are still pressing forward with this innovation because of the continued support from backers like you.
To our 32 Kickstarter backers—you wonderful, visionary few!
First let me express my profound gratitude for your willingness to take a chance with us. You are among the few who loved the idea of a Waterproof Book of Mormon. You ordered copies (and made generous pledges) in connection with our Kickstarter campaign.
My name is Boyd Tuttle, and I am the publisher of the Waterproof Book of Mormon at Digital Legend. Mark Burris has been my partner and the real visionary for this project from the very beginning. Together, we are reaching out to you as we press forward in this groundbreaking project.
Does the image below look familiar to you? It was captured the day our Kickstarter campaign expired. We were 20 percent funded!
“32 backers!” That is YOU! I’m looking at your names in front of me. Each one of you on is one of those intrepid pioneers. Yes, you are a pioneer! Out of the thousands who doubtless visited the site, you were the few whose sight could transcend the mundane, you could see the potential and the need for such a thing as a truly waterproof Book of Mormon (as contrasted with the many, who upon hearing about the project usually laughed out loud and wondered, “What? Why? I have my phone!”)
But they could not have anticipated what has happened since June 4, 2024, nor what is coming! So, I want you 32 to be the first to know the “rest of the story…”
In late July of 2024, the Church Intellectual Reserve Inc. (IRI) surprised us by granting full permission to use the © 2013 copyrighted edition of the Book of Mormon! (That is the current edition.) That is huge! You will see that now the look of the cover (and interior) has changed drastically.
Now, take a look at this next image. It should look very familiar. It’s nearly identical to the cover of Church's official edition of the Book of Mormon carried throughout the world. The only significant difference is at the bottom, which reads “Waterproof.” To the average reader, it will appear identical in nearly every respect, except in texture and weight.
Something else also happened in July. Our book supplier in Guangzhou, China was on their fifth attempt to assemble a truly waterproof book that could meet our stringent success criteria. Those criteria, by the way, were:
The book must be fully submerged in a bath of water for 90 minutes and then be retrieved and dried out...
- There could be no smearing or fading of the printed ink text
- There could be no smearing or fading of the permanent ink used to write notes on the pages
- There could be no failure of the glue binding material used in the spine (which proved to be the biggest challenge)
- After drying, the book had to recover to its former shape, size, suppleness, and pliability as if it had never seen water
Those tests were conducted here in Salt Lake City, and I personally performed the tests and observed the results. I can confirm that this latest version met all the requirements with flying colors!
It seemed just as we were at the end of our energy and resources, on that final attempt, we found success! Since that time, we have performed even more aggressive tests for toughness and durability. In fact, we have, floating in a mason jar, for more than eight (8) months, one page of the printed book that I take out to examine from time to time, each time has shown it be unaffected at all!
What does all this mean? It means we are about to place our production order for the first-ever Waterproof Book of Mormon! Keep in mind this is not the type of book that you can do a print-on-demand and get a small batch of to test out. Due to the extremely expensive materials involved, we must print thousands of copies to get the unit price down to acceptable levels that can be even close to manageable.
We are going to pull the trigger on this print run this week (the week of Sept 30, 2024). My question to you is, are you still with us? Do you want to pledge again? Only this time, we won't lose 5 percent to Kickstarter!
Here is our call to action... Can you help us again? Here is how:
- Scroll up and select a denomination amount of your choice
- Click "Add to cart"
- Proceed to checkout
- Your payment will go directly toward the cost of printing the Waterproof Book of Mormon.
You can also let me know via a message in the chat or via our contact form the quantity of books you want delivered to your home. Thank you for your support. Your contribution is 100% dedicated to getting the Waterproof Book of Mormon printed and into distribution!
Thank you, thank you!
