ABOUT THE BOOK

The Annotated Book of MormonĀ isĀ the first in the Annotated Sacred Texts Series and has set a new standard in the arena of latter-day Gospel study.Ā  It was created to help readers understand the everlasting gospel as explained in the text, together with what the modern prophets and apostles have taught about it. The text has been reformatted so readers can identify natural conversations, poetic speech patterns, prophecies, and the words of God. The annotations include prophetic commentaries on quoted scripture and the use of colored text. (See ā€œA Text Formatting Guide,ā€ pp. xxv and xxvi). These elements bear witness to the divinity of this ancient text by drawing upon Hebrew traditionā€”much different from nineteenth-century rural America known to Joseph Smith.

The Annotated Book of Mormon also focuses on an important part of Moroniā€™s introduction; i.e., the ā€œformer inhabitants of this continent.ā€ Joseph Smith, writing in Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1842, explained that ā€œthe remnant [of these ancient inhabitants] are the Indians that now inhabit this country.ā€ (See Appendix, ā€œChurch Historyā€”Wentworth Letter,ā€ pp. 546-549.) Oliver Cowdery mentioned this in his Letter VII (see p. 515).

As with other Annotated books by David R. Hocking, this work has similar features, including navy blue leather, gold embossing, gilded pages, red-lettering, prophetic insights, and cross-references to other scripture.
